Preventative Care Services

What are preventative care services?

Preventative care is care that is aimed at prevention of disease. Preventative care includes but is not limited to services like physical exam, vaccines, flea, tick, and heart worm prevention, and deworming.

We are not a full service clinic but every animal and pet we service receives an exam and we do have some vaccine, flea, tick, and heart worm prevention, and deworming options available on our mobile unit.

Vaccines we carry on Yanapana Veterinary Services are targeted towards the most common, most contagious, and most lethal diseases that we deal with in dogs and cats.

Dog Vaccines -

DA2PP - This protects against Distemper Virus, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Parvo Virus. Both Parvo Virus and Distemper Viruses are common in Southern California. Both diseases are highly contagious (easily spread from dog to dog) and have high morbidity and mortality rates - meaning there is a high risk your pet will get sick and there is a higher risk your pet will pass away as a result of the disease. The good news is the vaccine can give pets very good immunity when administered as recommended for your pets age.

Rabies - Rabies is becoming more and more of a concern in the United States. In Southern California it is primarily carried in our bat populations but all mammals including people are at risk of contracting the disease. In veterinary patients, the disease is considered 100% fatal and in people it also is almost always fatal. It can be spread from animals to people and people to animals. Vaccination is not only required by law for dogs and in some jurisdictions cats too but we also strongly recommend vaccination.

Cat Vaccines -

FVRCP - This protects against Feline Herpes Virus, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopania Virus. Herpes and Calici are highly contagious viral causes of upper respiratory disease that can include signs like like fever, cough, nasal congestion and discharge, ulcers on the eye, and ulcers on the tongue. Signs can be severe enough that sometimes cats need to be hospitalized for supportive care and if one cat in your house gets one of these viruses then it’s highly likely your other cats will also get sick. Panleukopenia in cats is the equivalent of Parvo in dogs. It was actually the Panleukopenia virus that mutated and became Parvo in dogs. Like Parvo in dogs, Panleukopenia is a highly contagious and often fatal disease in kittens and cats.
